His patience paid off some years later when two tragedies drew Jane and Topsy back together: In subsequent annulment proceedings, Ruskin himself made a statement to his lawyer to the effect that his marriage had been unconsummated. Millais began to move away from the Pre-Raphaelite style after his marriage, and Ruskin ultimately attacked his later works.
